When the idea of a Nordic center for watercolour techniques was formulated, it was considered important that the museum should embrace both the traditional duties of display and preservation along with the new responsibilities inherent in a learning centre for stimulating development. Då tanken om ett nordiskt centrum för vattenfärgsteknikerna utformades ingick både det traditionella museets uppgifter att visa och bevara och det nya kunskapscentrets att utveckla som viktiga delar. I sin första utställning fokuserar museet på båda dessa röda trådar. Koncentrationen ligger på den nordiska konstens utveckling under 1900-talet, tolkad med akvarellens språk. On the horizon

By exhibiting paintings by Helene Schjerfbeck from the early years of the 20th century, The Nordic Watercolour Museum chooses to cast light on a transitional period in Schjerfbeck’s art, a period full of experimentation both thematic and technical. During this period watercolour played a particularly important role in the development of her art. It can be claimed that it was just through her various attempts at the use of watercolour that she attained that synthesis which later became something of a trademark for her – a pictorial idiom striving to attain the ultimate simplicity. Many of the subjects are scenes from her home at Hyvinge (Finland) where Schjerfbeck lived with her mother. The exhibition also includes a series of self-portraits.

Genom att ställa ut Helene Schjerfbecks målningar från tidigt 1900-tal fokuserar Nordiska Akvarellmuseet på en brytningstid i Schjerfbecks måleri, en tid som är fylld med experimenterande, både tematiskt och tekniskt. Under seklets första år får just akvarellen en särskild betydelse för den utveckling som hennes måleri går igenom. Man kan hävda att just genom de olika försöken i vattenfärgsteknikerna når hon fram till den syntes som sedan blir något av ett varumärke för henne: ett bildspråk som strävar mot den ytterst förenklade bilden. In 1993, the Danish Bible Society published a special edition of the Bible in Danish. For this work, illustrations in watercolour were commissioned from Bodil Kaalund, Denmark’s leading church painter and member of the Royal Danish Academy of Art. The exhibition presents her original illustrations and a collection of other paintings on the same theme, together with three vestments designed by the artist.

Det Danske Bibelsällskap gav 1993 ut en praktutgåva av Bibeln på danska. För verket beställdes illustrationer i akvarell av Danmarks mesta kyrkomålare och medlemmen av Den Kongelige Kunstakademien Bodil Kaalund. Pictures from the Bible

The installation Light Field comprises two hundred white, fragrant lilies, illuminated as if by magic each in its own glass bottle. On the walls around hang some fifty watercolour paintings. Ever since her years as a student at the Oslo art academy Line Bergseth has included flowers, plants and plant life as subjects in her art. At a first glance her paintings can seem to resemble botanical illustrations, but a closer look reveals that every picture is a portrait of a unique and individual plant which – each on its own terms – has been formed by the place, the time and the climate in which it has grown.

Installationen Light Field innehåller tvåhundra vita, doftande liljor, magiskt upplysta i var sin glasflaska. Denna omges på utställningssalens väggar av ett femtiotal akvareller. Sedan studietiden på konstakademien i Oslo har Line Bergseth använt blommor, växter och deras liv som motiv i sin konst. Vid ett snabbt studium kan hennes måleri likna botaniska illustrationer. Men tittar vi närmare ser vi att varje bild är ett porträtt av en unik växtindivid som utifrån sina egna förutsättningar har formats av platsen, tiden och klimatet där den växt.

Salvador Dalí was one of the leading figures in modern art. Few have meant as much as Dalí for Modernism, and especially for the rise and development of Surrealism. For many, Dalí and Surrealism are synonymous. Salvador Dalí was a pioneer in many fields.The exhibition displays watercolours and drawings loaned from the Fundacio Gala-Salvador Dalí and the Teatre-Museu Dalí in Figueres, Spain. Most of the works date from the 1940s when Dalí spent time in the US. They are original artworks illustrating three of literature’s classics: Cellini’s autobiography, de Montaigne’s essays and Cervante’s Don Quixote.

This is a journey through the multi-facetted range of watercolour and its borderlands, and illustrates the cultural variety to be found in such a large land as the USA. The journey takes us from the sun-drenched shores of California, via the cultures of the Native American population to the situation of the black women in the southern states. His skilful brush and sharp eye enable us to share his experience of plant and animal life. While remaining within a classic watercolour tradition with influences from England he nevertheless remains in close touch with the everyday realities of present time and with global environmental issues.

It is impossible not to think of beauty when one sees the art of Mats Gustafson. With his solid and impressive background as a fashion illustrator of international standing, Gustafson has now turned his activities to free art. The exhibition, devoted to earlier works as well as completely new ones, ranges from romantic depictions of natural scenery from the American east coast to sensitive portraits of animals and graceful bodies.

Notes

The exhibition consists of some fifty marine paintings from Åland and the Swedish island of Tjörn. Curator for this exhibition is Kjell Ekström, head of the Åland Museum at Mariehamn. The Nordic Watercolour Museum is responsible for the exhibition’s production. The pictures from Åland are loaned from the Åland Maritime Museum while the Tjörn images have been lent by private collectors. The main emphasis is on watercolour, though many of the paintings show a wide range of techniques.

Utställningen presenterar ett femtiotal marinmålningar från Åland och Tjörn. Museichef Kjell Ekström från Ålands museum i Mariehamn är curator för utställningen. För produktionen står Nordiska Akvarellmuseet. Bilderna från Åland kommer från Ålands sjöfartsmuseum, medan tjörnbilderna har lånats ut av privata långivare. Koncentration ligger på akvarelltekniken, medan många av bilderna är utförda i blandtekniker.

Portraits of ships

Vanessa Baird employs biting black humour to describe different situations in human life. She often adopts an elegant romantic story-book style but one in which the subject she has chosen abruptly shatters the viewer’s peace of mind. Animals and people in absurd and frequently sexual situations point to the collapse of propriety, and her work also includes powerful social criticism with clear feminist overtones.In this exhibition, a collaboration with the Galleri Wang in Oslo, Baird presents recent watercolours together with painted pottery.

Vanessa Baird

Sol LeWitt, born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1928, ranks among the most significant of contemporary artists. Taking as his starting point the architecture and shape of the exhibition galleries he then proceeds to produce a quite unique exhibition. Working from basic sketches that he has made especially for this museum, he creates wall frescoes and drawings to fit the space. The exhibition is complemented by works on paper from recent years. The catalogue includes some of LeWitt’s texts on conceptual art from the ‘50s and ‘60s.The exhibition is the first major one-person exhibition of Sol LeWitt’s wall paintings and drawings to be shown in the Nordic countries.

Katalogen innehåller bl.a. ett par av LeWitts texter om konceptkonst från 50- och 60-talen.Utställningen är den första större separata utställningen med Sol LeWitts platsspecifika verk som visas i Norden.

Georg Guðni is a leading contemporary Icelandic artist. He started his artistic career in the 1980’s and since then his native countryside had provided his constant inspiration. He is best known for his large oil paintings but his watercolours reveal a different and important side to his work. In them he explores the spartan Icelandic landscape – the contours of horizon and hills&nbsp;– and the atmospheric sensation it conveys. Through shifting colours he creates a sense of disintegration and endless expanses of view, and these imbue his work with a very special feeling and characterise all his art.

Georg Guðni är en av Islands mest betydelsefulla målare inom samtidskonsten. Han började sitt konstnärskap på 1980-talet och sedan dess har den isländska naturen varit hans ständiga inspiration. Han är mest känd för sina stora oljemålningar, men hans akvareller visar en annan viktig sida av hans konst. Där utforskar han det spartanska i det isländska landskapet – horisonten och bergets konturer – och den atmosfäriska förnimmelse det ger. I varierande toner får han fram en känsla av upplösning och oändlig vidd, som ger hans verk en mycket speciell stämning och som kännetecknar hela hans konstnärskap.

Watercolour technique is a powerful tool in the searching hands of artist Lars Lerin. He is a master of its potential and submits to its capricious temperament. The subjects for his works he finds in the places where he makes his home. He grew up in the Swedish province of Värmland, close to the thick forests and where the long summer nights and the darkness of winter are a part of existence. On the Norwegian Lofoten Islands he discovered the sea and horizon. He has a feeling for the grandeur of natural scenery and a sympathy for the tough conditions under which people work there. In his paintings he returns time and again to how people live and work in home and factory. Memories, words, sentences and fragments of images recur frequently in his paintings; together they form a puzzle of memories which capture impressions of life and warmth such as perhaps no longer exist. It is a nostalgic, existential longing common to us all.

I Värmland växte han upp nära de stora skogarna, med sommarnattens ljus och vinterns mörker som följeslagare. På Lofoten fann han havet och horisonten. Han känner naturens storslagenhet och människans hårda livsvillkor. Spåren efter människors liv och arbete i boningar och fabriker återkommer han ständigt till. Minnesbilder, ord, meningar och bildfragment finns ofta med i hans bilder; ett pussel av minnen som fångar avtryck av liv och värme som kanske inte längre finns. In the summer of 2004, The Nordic Watercolour Museum presents an exhibition of some sixty watercolours by the Swedish artist Anders Zorn. Included are both well known and unfamiliar works, the majority painted during the initial intensive phase of his artistic career. Anders Zorn was famed and internationally successful even during his lifetime. His career and life story are remarkable and many are the tales concerning this illegitimate son born to a girl from the Swedish province of Dalecarlia and a German brewer. His watercolours bring us in close contact with this artist who impressed all with his eagle eye and skilful hand. We can trace his development from the work which made his name, painted while still at the academy, to the glittering light paintings of the close of the 19th century. Until as late as 1887 Anders Zorn worked almost exclusively in watercolour and mastered the technique to perfection. He established at an early stage the subjects he was to work with throughout his life. The exhibition offers handsome society portraits, depictions of the life of the common people and studies of women in settings of natural scenery. Also here are numerous sea studies, both fleeting impressions and careful observations in which Anders Zorn reveals that he never tired of the meeting of water, sky and light. The works on show in this exhibition are borrowed from the Zorn collections at Mora, Sweden, from Statens Museum for Kunst at Copenhagen, the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and the Göteborgs konstmuseum.

Sommaren 2004 har Nordiska Akvarellmuseet glädjen att kunna visa ett sextiotal av Anders Zorns akvareller. Utställningen innehåller både kända och okända verk, de flesta tillkomna under den första intensiva fasen av hans konstnärskap. Redan under sin livstid blev Anders Zorn en mycket känd konstnär och internationellt framgångsrik. Hans karriär och livshistoria är häpnadsväckande och runt berättelsen om den oäkta sonen till en dalkulla och en tysk bryggare har många historier spunnits. I akvarellerna och kommer vi nära den konstnär som imponerade på alla med sitt skarpa öga och sin skickliga hand. Vi kan följa utvecklingen från akademitidens genombrottsbild till det sena 1800-talets skimrande ljusskildringar. Fram till 1887 arbetade Anders Zorn närmast uteslutande i akvarell och bemästrade tekniken fullständigt.De motivkretsar som han arbetade med genom hela livet utvecklade han tidigt. I utställningen finns vackra societsporträtt, folklivskildringar och studier av kvinnor i naturen. Samtidigt möter vi flera studier av havet, både snabba intryck och noggranna undersökningar där Anders Zorn visar att han aldrig tröttnade på vattnets, himlens och ljusets möte.Verken är inlånade från Zornsamlingarna i Mora, Statens Museum for Kunst i Köpenhamn, Nationalmuseum i Stockholm och Göteborgs konstmuseum.

Anu Tuominen’s gaze and thoughts are constantly in motion as she observes and seeks treasures in the material world that surrounds us. Every day, she discovers treasures invisible to others. Like a gatherer, she collects her findings and creates unexpected new contexts from them. She arranges and sorts, hangs or stacks. At times, she adds to her discoveries with yarn or paint.All the human qualities we imbue our objects with becomes part of the artwork: their appearance, colour, shape, and material; their uses; their names in different languages; or the associations their names might evoke. Anu Tuominen dissolves the boundary between thought and feeling, playing equally with the colours of things as with meanings and language.She is a sensual conceptual artist. Observing her art often evokes rapid associations, where a sense of familiarity and recognition coexists with surprise and a defamiliarisation of the everyday. She helps us see the world from a new perspective.Anu Tuominen was born in 1961 in Lemi, Finland, and now lives and works in Helsinki. She holds a master’s degree from the Department of Interior Architecture and Furniture Design at the University of Art and Design UIAH and from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. Anu Tuominen is one of Finland’s most acclaimed conceptual artists, with an active exhibition schedule both in her home country and on the international art scene. The Nordic Watercolour Museum’s exhibition is the first major presentation of her work in Sweden. Here, she has placed colour at the forefront: as a sensory expression, an organising principle, and as experience, concept, and idea.

Som en äkta sakletare samlar hon på sina fynd och av det hon hittar skapar hon nya oväntade sammanhang. Hon ordnar och sorterar, hänger upp eller staplar. Ibland gör hon tillägg på det funna med garn eller färg.Allt det mänskliga som vi lägger in i våra föremål blir del av verket, hur de ser ut, deras färg, form och material, vad de har använts till, vad de heter på olika språk eller vad namnen kanske liknar. Anu Tuominen löser upp åtskillnaden mellan tanke och känsla och leker lika mycket med tingens färg som med betydelser och språk.Hon är en sinnlig konceptkonstnär. Life’s innermost mysteries are at the core of Bill Viola’s art. He was born in New York in 1951, and has for nearly forty years been developing and expanding video as an art form. His curiosity and experimental urge has led him to work with the very latest technology. But in his art technology has always remained a tool and never an aim in itself.A desire to explore what defies description – experiences beyond the reach of words, intellect or emotions – permeate the six works in this exhibition. They were created between 1977 and 2008 and in all of them water is present.Water and movement are preconditions for watercolour art and for life itself. The history of painting has been one of Bill Viola’s main sources of inspiration, alongside his studies of spiritual traditions such as Sufism, Christian mysticism and Zen Buddhism.The exhibition invites viewers to experience a series of living paintings in which we find ourselves enveloped in moving images and sound. Our sense of time is both reinforced and questioned – the works flow across the themes of birth, life and death but lack clear endings or firm conclusions.In the opinion of Bill Viola, art museums are among the few public spaces remaining to us today where reflection and consideration are allowed free play.

Nyfikenhet och experimentlust har fört honom till de senaste tekniska landvinningarna. I konstverken har tekniken dock alltid varit ett redskap, aldrig ett mål.Viljan att beröra det outsägbara – erfarenheter bortom ord, intellekt och känsla genomströmmar de sex verk som visas i denna utställning. De är skapade mellan 1977 och 2008 och i alla är vattnet närvarande.Vatten och rörelse är grundförutsättningar för både liv och akvarellkonst. Målerikonstens historia är en av Bill Violas viktigaste inspirationskällor parallellt med hans studier av andliga traditioner inom sufism, kristen mystik och zenbuddism.Utställningen bjuder in till en serie levande målningar där vi som åskådare omsluts av rörliga bilder och ljud. Vår upplevelse av tiden både förstärks och ifrågasätts – i verken finns en rörelse mellan födelse, liv och död men inga slutpunkter eller fasta slutsatser.&nbsp;Bill Viola menar att konstmuseer är ett av de få offentliga rum i vår samtid där reflektion och eftertanke får ta plats.

Peter Land is a Danish artist with an extraordinary ability to spot what most people would never notice. Stepping into his pictorial world is like embarking on a bewildering journey through the memories and sensations of childhood.He was born in 1966 and trained in Denmark and England. In his art he works with various techniques and media, primarily with video, sculpture and detailed watercolour paintings. His works are represented at institutions including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and MoMA in New York.His watercolours evoke a sense of familiarity in the viewer, drawing on imagery reminiscent of illustrated children’s books and comic strips. Using bright colours, clear outlines, and satirically exaggerated figures, Land generates a sense of grotesque comedy. We become spectators to a drama where laughter and terror are the competing protagonists.It is the child’s experience of the world around him that provides Peter Land’s focus. The child’s ability to use imagination in order to make sense of the incomprehensible and frightening is paralleled by his desire to fit in and understand the rules of the adult world. The title of this exhibition, Black Pedagogy, offers a historical lens through which to interpret his work. This concept refers to an upbringing method that seeks to dominate both body and will, using the threat of punishment to teach the child self-control.The exhibition includes both newly painted watercolour series along with a wide selection from Peter Land’s earlier production.&nbsp;

Peter Land är en dansk konstnär som ser mer än de flesta ens lägger märke till.&nbsp;Att kliva in i hans bildvärld är en omtumlande resa bland bildminnen och känslor från barndomen.&nbsp;Han föddes 1966 och har utbildat sig i Danmark och England. I sin konst arbetar han med olika tekniker och medier, främst video, skulptur och detaljerat tecknade akvareller. One of the spring exhibitions in 2013 showcases Gunnel Wåhlstrand, one of Sweden’s foremost contemporary artists.Wåhlstrand is a master of detail. Her large-scale, virtuoso ink wash paintings are characterised by an almost unbelievable precision. Her technique is honed to perfection, creating the illusion of old, greatly magnified photographs. The starting point for the works is her family’s photo albums, featuring images from an indeterminate 1940s and 1950s. We step into silent bourgeois parlours and gaze out over tranquil landscapes. The images bear no trace of the tragedies that life so often entails.Gunnel Wåhlstrand, born in 1974 in Uppsala, was educated at institutions including the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. Her body of work is small in terms of the number of pieces. Each painting is the result of a meticulous and time-consuming process, where even a single misplaced drop can necessitate starting over. It is also a process of spending time with the photographs and delving into her own family history. For Wåhlstrand, art is a way of building a connection with the loved ones she never had the chance to meet.The exhibition features Gunnel Wåhlstrand’s latest works, shown to the public for the first time.

En av vårens utställningar 2013 presenterar Gunnel Wåhlstrand,&nbsp;en av Sveriges främsta samtidskonstnärer.&nbsp;Wåhlstrand är detaljernas konstnär. Hennes storskaliga, virtuosa tuschlaveringar kännetecknas av en närmast ofattbar precision. Tekniken är driven till det yttersta och skapar illusionen av att vi betraktar gamla fotografier, starkt förstorade. Utgångspunkten är familjens fotoalbum med bilder från ett obestämt 1940- och 50-tal. Vi kliver in i tysta borgerliga salonger och blickar ut över stilla landskap. På bilderna finns inga spår av de tragedier som livet kantas av.&nbsp;Gunnel Wåhlstrand, född 1974 i Uppsala, är utbildad bland annat vid Konsthögskolan i Stockholm. Hennes samlade produktion är inte stor om man räknar antal verk. Varje målning förlöses under en mödosam, tidskrävande process. En spilld droppe innebär att arbetet måste börja på nytt. Det handlar också om att tillbringa tid med fotografierna och ta sig in i sin egen familjehistoria. Konsten är Gunnel Wåhlstrands sätt att skapa en relation till de närmaste som hon inte fick träffa.&nbsp;I utställningen visas Gunnel Wåhlstrands nyaste verk, som för första gången presenteras för konstpubliken.

We live in the age of images. An increasing share of humanity's living spaces has been created, coloured, and shaped by ourselves.Joe Grillo is an American artist working at the heart of today’s visual flow. "More of everything" seems to be the motto of his vibrant universe. Inspiration from advertising, pop art, and graffiti sits alongside influences from experimental electronic music, art history, and video games.Born in 1980, Joe Grillo grew up in Virginia Beach, a tourist town on the Atlantic coast with miles of beaches, souvenir shops, discos, and surf centres. Early on, together with childhood friends, he formed a creative artist group called Dearraindrop. Their primary motivation was to explore their own paths and modes of expression. They aimed to work collectively in an individualistic era, to transcend genre boundaries, and to move freely within the structures of both society and the art world. While the group still works together, they now also pursue their individual artistic practices.For this exhibition, Joe Grillo has created a three-dimensional collage that literally invites us to step into the artwork as a whole. Using his own images and sculptures as building blocks, he combines earlier works with entirely new creations.

Vi lever i bildens tidevarv.&nbsp; Alltmer av människans livsrum har skapats, färgsatts och formats av henne själv.Joe Grillo är en amerikansk konstnär som arbetar mitt i nutidens visuella flöde. ”Mer av allt” verkar vara mottot i hans färgstarka universum. Inspiration från reklam, popkonst och graffiti finns sida vid sida med influenser från elektronisk experimentmusik, konsthistoria och tv-spel.Joe Grillo föddes 1980 och växte upp i Virgina Beach, en turistort vid atlantkusten med miltals av stränder, souvenirbutiker, diskotek och surfingcentra. Tillsammans med barndomsvänner formade han tidigt en kreativ konstnärlig grupp som döptes till Dearraindrop. Att hitta egna vägar och uttryck var deras drivkraft. De ville arbeta kollektivt i en individualistisk tid, överskrida genregränser och röra sig fritt, både i samhällets och konstvärldens strukturer. De arbetar fortfarande tillsammans men numera också var och en för sig.I denna utställning har Joe Grillo skapat ett tredimensionellt collage där vi bokstavligt kliver in i konstverket som en helhet. Han använder sig av sina egna bilder och skulpturer som byggklossar och blandar sina äldre verk med helt nyskapade.

The American artist Alice Neel (1900–1984) devoted the majority of her life to figurative art. While abstract expressionism flourished on the American art scene, Alice Neel chose to stick firmly to her own artistic idiom. Her colourful portrait paintings with their distinctive outlines are as much concerned with individuals as with social, cultural and political divisions within society. The key to Neel’s creative work was her conviction of the unique and powerful meeting between the artist and the model. Although she became well known for her painted portraits, especially of people such as Andy Warhol, photographer Samuel Brody and art critic John Perreault, her works on paper are virtually unknown to the general public. They show a much more personal and intimate side of her art in highly sensitive and timeless works. There are impressive images of the artist’ family and friends as well as delicate works where she deals with her own personal life, both its joy and pain. The exhibition is the first major presentation of Alice Neel’s watercolours and drawings ever to be held. Works are on loan from the Estate of Alice Neel in New York and international museums and private collections in USA and Europe.

Den amerikanska konstnären Alice Neel (1900–1984) ägnade porträttkonsten hela sitt liv. Medan den abstrakta expressionismen utvecklades framgångsrikt på den amerikanska konstscenen höll Alice Neel fast vid sitt eget formspråk. Hon valde figurativt måleri. Hennes färgskimrande porträtt med distinkta konturer och en besynnerlig närhet till modellerna, handlar både om individer och om sociala, kulturella och politiska klyftor i samhället. Hon målade aldrig på beställning. Bara sällan skapade hon ur minnet. Nyckeln till Neels skapande var övertygelsen om det unika mötet mellan konstnären och modellen.&nbsp;Bland de avporträtterade finns både familjemedlemmar och kända personligheter som Andy Warhol, fotografen Sam Brody och konstkritikern John Perreault. I skapandet finns även spår av konstnärens personliga tragedier, som kärlekssorger och förluster av barn. Hennes verk på papper är både storslagna och tidlösa.&nbsp;Alice Neels verk på papper är dock fortfarande närmast okända för allmänheten. Utställningen på Nordiska Akvarellmuseet är den första stora presentationen av konstnärens akvareller och teckningar någonsin. Verken kommer från Alice Neels Stiftelse i New York samt privata ägare och museer.

Approaching Martin Jacobson's visual world is like stepping into an enchanted forest. In folklore, the forest was a scene of dangers and adventures, an arena for magic and transformation but also a refuge. In the world of fairy tales, it was sometimes populated by wonderful animals and plants, by trolls, fairies and other strange creatures. However, they are not the ones we meet in the exhibition Excursions. Instead, we are invited to a journey through fantasy landscapes, where each glade, lake and tree trunk whispers their secret stories.

I folktron var skogen en skådeplats för faror och äventyr, en arena för magi och förvandlingar men också en tillflykt. A good picture book is a magical merging of image and text that together to tell a story. This meeting serves as the hub for activities at the museum during autumn 2013.In The Picture Book in New Guises, 12 Nordic picture book artists present original works from their latest books – most published within the past year, and some so new they have not yet reached bookstores.We aim to explore the stories being told today and how they are being told. The selection focuses on fictional picture books, all of which, in various ways, incorporate a child’s perspective. En bra bilderbok handlar om ett magiskt möte mellan bild och text som tillsammans skapar en berättelse. Det mötet blir ett nav för aktiviteter på museet under hösten 2013.&nbsp;I Bilderbokens nya skepnader visar 12 nordiska bilderboksskapare original från nya bilderböcker, de flesta utkomna under det allra senaste året och några så nya att de ännu inte finns i bokhandeln.Vi vill undersöka vilka berättelser som berättas just nu och hur de berättas. Urvalet handlar om skönlitterära bilderböcker och alla har, på olika vis, ett barnperspektiv. The Picture Book in New Guises

In this comprehensive retrospective exhibition, we encounter a unique artist who blended the wit of pop art with the depth of surrealism, drew inspiration from music, and approached Donald Duck with the same seriousness as Hamlet.Olli Lyytikäinen (1949–87) was a painter, draftsman, and photographer. In his imaginative watercolours, humour and clarity go hand in hand. Since his debut in the early 1970s, his skill and distinctive expression have been celebrated by audiences and critics alike. His breakthrough came in 1973 with the exhibition From Africa to Eternity.Despite Lyytikäinen's relatively short life, his body of work is extensive and timelessly fascinating. His inventive visual world remains continually relevant, especially today, as figurative painting gains increasing prominence. The exhibition includes works spanning his entire career, on loan from museums and private collectors across the Nordic countries.The exhibition is supported by the Hélène and Walter Grönqvist Foundation, the Sigurd Frosterus Foundation, and the Cultural Foundation for Sweden and Finland.

I en omfattande&nbsp;retrospektiv utställning möter vi en unik konstnär som förenade popkonstens skämt med surrealismens djup, sökte inspiration i musiken och behandlade Kalle Anka med samma allvar som Hamlet.Olli Lyytikäinen (1949–87) var målare, tecknare och fotograf. I hans fantasieggande akvareller går humor och klarsyn hand i hand. Sedan debuten i början av 70-talet har hans skicklighet och säregna uttryck uppskattats av såväl publik som kritiker. Genombrottet kom 1973 med utställningen&nbsp;Från Afrika till evigheten.&nbsp;Trots Lyytikäinens relativt korta liv är hans konstnärskap omfattande och tidlöst intressant. Hans uppfinningsrika bildvärld är ständigt aktuell, särskilt idag när det figurativa måleriet vinner alltmer mark. Fleeing Hamlet – In the Head of Olli Lyytikäinen

Lars Lerin is a master of watercolour. He knows everything there is to know&nbsp;about the temper and movement of this media, along with its strengths and&nbsp;weaknesses. His images bear the imprint of his hands but also of his heart and mind. This summer’s extensive exhibition embraces both sadness and warmth, melancholia and hope.Visitors who are already familiar with Lerin's watercolours will recognise his typical treatment of light, which seems almost magically to illuminate the works from within.&nbsp;We will also discover new qualities in the artist’s extended subject matter.&nbsp;Nature has previously been a dominating element in Lerin’s work. Recently, he has begun taking a greater interest in the man-made world. His new works show the backdrops to our everyday lives. A sense of claustrophobia and isolation recurs in the dilapidated suburbs of European cities, but also in the watercolours of stuffed animals in the Gothenburg Natural History Museum. The emphasis is on house facades and window dressings. This is about feeling lost and alienated, about having gradually become more of an onlooker than a participator in the course of life. In Lerin's exhibition, the artist and spectator are both observers from the outside.Lars Lerin has also begun to reinterpret works by other artists and paint stills from films that have moved him, reproducing key scenes from classics by both Alfred Hitchcock and Werner Herzog. The result is paintings with the characteristic suspense of the film medium.Lars Lerin was born in Munkfors in 1954. He studied at Gerlesborgsskolan in&nbsp;Stockholm in 1974-75 and at the Valand Academy in Gothenburg in 1980-84.&nbsp;Lerin has long been recognised as one of the foremost Nordic watercolourists and has exhibited extensively in group and solo shows at galleries and museums in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, France, the Faroe Islands, Norway, Germany and the USA.

Hans nya bilder visar kulisser för vårt dagliga liv. Känslan av instängdhet och ensamhet återkommer i slitna förorter i Europas storstäder, men också i de akvareller som avbildar uppstoppade djur på Naturhistoriska museet i Göteborg. Husfasader och dekorationer i skyltfönster står i centrum. Det handlar om vilsenhet och utanförskap, om att vi blivit alltmer observatörer än deltagare i livets gång. I Lerins utställning spelar både konstnär och betraktare rollen som utomstående betraktare.Lars Lerin har också börjat omtolka verk av andra konstnärer och målat stillbilder från filmer som berört honom. Painting in Indian ink is one of the oldest and most traditional forms of Chinese art. Interest in this ancient art form – at present undergoing a renaissance – has never been stronger. Today’s youthful generation of artists seek the inspiration of their roots, follow the old techniques and experiment with them to find new modes of expression. China's Changing Landscape

Along with traditional and contemporary watercolour art, The Nordic Watercolour Museum has a special focus on picture storytelling for children and young people.Fourth Upon a Time... Eva, Harriët, Kitty, Nadja is the fifth exhibition with this theme in focus.Here, we encounter four artists and picture book creators from four European countries. They all have a deeply personal visual language and create narratives that challenge and cause one to marvel. In the exhibition, the artists will present their books as well as completely different sides of their artistry. They have chosen to work together and&nbsp;let their different worlds collide – resulting in new art, new pictures, and new stories.During one week in December 2014, they all met in Skärhamn to create images together – this exhibition is the result.Participating artists: Kitty Crowther, Eva Lindström, Nadja and Harriët van Reek

Kitty Crowther (b. 1970, Belgium) is an author and illustrator, who lives and works in Belgium. Her main tools are pencils, coloured pencils and ink. Kitty Crowther’s loyalty to children is unconditional and her work often shows how the loneliness we all carry is a natural part of life and does not need to be daunting.

Eva Lindström (b. 1952, Sweden) studied at Västerås School of Art and at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm.She is both an author and illustrator. Lindström began working as a cartoonist but gradually transitioned to illustrating books. Lindström’s visual language moves directly without circumlocution to charged states and strong emotions. Thematically, she moves effortlessly between the most everyday and the deeply existential.

Nadja is an artist, illustrator and author who lives and works in Paris. She was born in Alexandria, Egypt. Nadja grew up in the Paris region after some time in Lebanon and had an unconventional childhood. Up to the age of 13, she was educated through correspondence courses and by her mother, Olga Lecaye, who was an artist of Russian descent. She made her debut as a children’s author in 1988. Her pictures, in expressionistic style, usually cover the whole page. Nadja is drawn to the dark forces in fairytale worlds. This is balanced, however, by touches of humour and happiness in her picture tales.

Harriët van Reek (b. 1957, the Netherlands) is a children’s book author and illustrator. She trained as a drawing and crafts teacher. After a few years of travel through Africa, Japan, and Ireland, she returned to her homeland and eventually established herself as an artist. Harriët van Reek’s books are distinguished by a special balance between image and text. The artist often omits details and consciously creates a deceptively simplistic design reminiscent of children’s drawings. The humorous stories often tend towards the absurd and are driven by unexpected twists. The child’s perspective is an obvious starting point.
